Founded in 1927, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota Florida includes more than 28,000 works of art. Exhibitions are varied and new collections are featured throughout the year. The history of the circus comes to life through the vast and varied collections in the Circus Museum. Among the highlights of the collection are performers’ wardrobes, beautifully carved parade wagons, sturdy utility wagons, and a cannon that shot fearless performers across the big top. Among the paper collections are beautifully printed lithographic posters used to advertise circuses and other fine art prints that document the circus’ influence on American and European cultures. Singular items such as The Howard Bros. Circus Model, The Greatest Show on Earth Mural, and John and Mable Ringling’s private Pullman car, The Wisconsin, are among the stars of the Circus Museum collections.
The Tibbals International Collection at The Ringling Museum contains an extensive and noteworthy collection of circus and circus-related prints dating from the sixteenth through twentieth centuries, from locations all over the globe. Portraits of performers and sideshow attractions, animal images, political cartoons, and architectural prints all help to tell the story of the early days of the circus and performing arts outside of the United States.
There are many other works of art related to European and American artwork, Antiquities, Italian, Spanish, French, Asian collections and so much more. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art grounds open daily 9:30 am – 5:30 pm, however the hours may vary due to special events. Please inquire upon your arrival for any time adjustments.
